Why EM?
The use of EM for exploration and production of hydrocarbons – while not a replacement for seismic techniques – provides sensitivity in regions such as sub-basalt and sub-salt that are traditionally difficult to image with standard seismic methods. This is due to the EM method’s sensitivity to resistivity contrast as opposed to density contrasts probed by seismic methods. This provides independent information that can be used to reduce risk in exploration and better delineate known reservoirs.
